The mouth-nose protection, also known as a hygiene mask, is a tool used to reduce the transmission of pathogens through secretory droplets. It is a half-face mask made of multiple layers of nonwoven fabric that is secured behind the ears with elastic bands. A built-in flexible metal strip at the center of the upper edge allows the mask to be pressed against the bridge of the nose, keeping the field of vision clear and restricting the upward escape of breath. Long before the coronavirus pandemic, many doctors and dentists used a mouth-nose protection mask. It is also known as a surgical mask, OR mask, or MNS mask. The mask protects patients and others in the immediate vicinity from droplets that the wearer might expel while speaking. For the wearer, the mouth-nose protection mask only provides protection against larger droplets. Additionally, it prevents the wearer from unconsciously touching their mouth or nose with dirty hands.
